Murphy is married to Catherine Holahan, whom he met while they both got law degrees from the University of Connecticut. They graduated in 2001 and have two teenage sons.

“With the election behind us – our seventh together – we have some news we wanted to share with you,” they wrote in an email to family and friends on Friday, Nov. 15. “After much reflection and discussion, we have decided to separate as a couple. We do so with deep care and respect for each other, and with a focus on continuing to be friends and loving, collaborative parents to our boys whom we adore.”

The Hartford Courant received a copy of the email and published it.

The couple said the decision to separate came after "much reflection and discussion," though they did not go into detail on what led to those talks.

“This was a difficult decision, but we believe that it is right for us, and we are going to move onto this new path the right way," they wrote. "We will continue to support each other personally and professionally."

Murphy defeated Republican Matthew Corey last week in a rematch of the 2018 election. He was first elected to the Senate in 2012. He served in the US House of Representatives before that.
